I get asked now and then what type of lenses etc. I use when I shoot properties and interior photographs for clients. Well the lens that I use 95% of the time is the Canon 16 - 35mm I find it great to shoot any house or apartment. But as with everything you have to do some editing within Lightroom, Photoshop or equal to sort out the lens distortion when you shoot at the widest (16mm)
When it comes to lights or if I use lights at all...
I like to shoot with flash, and when I can, I use 1 or 2 Elinchrome 400 D-lites.
I always use a light meeter to record the ambient light in the room, this is so I can get the warm light from a lamp bulb or the natural light from the outside in the windows. It also helps with getting the information you can see outside the window, such as the blue sky, gardens etc. In other words you shoot for the natural light outside or inside. You simply use the flashes mainly to fill the "dark" room at the same light value. This will then allow you to get that blue sky through the window or the green grass in the garden but at the same time the flash will fill the kitchen, bedroom, living room with light.
I usually have 1 light behind the camera with a large white brolly (as its easier to carry about, then a soft box) and I use the 2nd light with another brolly on it. This would be located in the hall or another room separate to the room I am in, this is so the light can fill the next room with light if so needed.
This is so you don't get a empty dark room on the other side of the door.
What if you can't use Studio flashes on location due to no electricity etc...?
If I don't have sockets that I can connect my lights to, I usually use 1 or 2 - 580 EX II flashes with a Lastolite Easybox with the same set up as above. I use batterie packs to allow me to shoot more frequently and I don't need to think of changing batteries every 10min due to high flash voltage to fight the natural light. The batterie packs I use are made by Propack - Godox FB2000, and I have found them to be a great product. These packs follow me every where I go and they are always in my bag on a shoot. When it comes to how I trigger my lights, I used to use Elinchrome Skyport. But I am now on my second batch after the failed on me yet again. They are not as well built as I once thought they would be. The batteries that are supposedly re-chargeble fail after maybe only 1 or two charges, and for €150 per trigger it was not worth it. So I have opted for the new Pocket wizard III (€321 for pack of 2) These are my work horses now and again they never leave my bag on any shoot.
